A Site of Great Geological Interest
The Pointe du Payré in Jard-sur-Mer, Vendée, is a must-see destination for geology enthusiasts, just a stone's throw from our campsite in Vendée. This exceptional site, with its unique biodiversity, is part of the Natura 2000 program, aimed at preserving natural heritage. While the Pointe du Payré boasts unparalleled natural lushness with a multitude of plant species, it also holds significant geological interest. The Pointe du Payré lies at the junction of a geological contrast between rocks dating from the primary era and more recent sediments. On one side are the deformed (folded) rock layers that shifted when the Armorican Massif rose several hundred million years ago, and on the other, the less ancient sedimentary layers of the Aquitaine Basin, dating from the Lias period, in the age of dinosaurs. You can trace this junction along the cliff for several kilometers, where the upper sedimentary layers meet the older Hercynian layers below. You'll notice that the gray limestone sedimentary strata are rich in fossils. Beneath them lies silicified Lias, often rust-colored, deposited on the Hercynian basement—the oldest geological era.
A Must-Visit Hiking Destination in Vendée
The Pointe du Payré is ideal for easy hiking trails. Routes range from 1.5 hours (about 5 km) to 4 hours, depending on the chosen itinerary. A walk of at least 1.5 hours is recommended to fully explore the Pointe du Payré and its magnificent landscapes.
Starting from the Mine parking lot, head to the beach of the same name, then follow the path leading through a forest of green oaks. The tree trunks have been shaped by the sea winds, giving them a fascinating appearance. Exiting the forest, you'll reach the cliff, where you can take time to observe sedimentary rock layers from different geological periods, between the Jurassic and the primary era. A little further along, you'll arrive at the customs trail, a marked path designed to guide hikers while preserving the delicate natural balance of the area. The excursion leads to the Pointe du Payré, where the Veillon Beach stretches out. From here, enjoy stunning views of the beach, the Payré estuary, and even Les Sables d'Olonne on a clear day. The path loops back into the forest. Simply follow the marked signs to return to the parking lot.
